What is Wayfinding Signage?

The short answer is that Wayfinding Signage is concerned with helping you get from Point A to Point B and providing confirmation along the way.

Wayfinding Signage is not advertising or informational signage such as a bus schedule. Wayfinding Signage has 3 main characteristics: Direction, Confirmation, and Informational (such as airport arrival/departure details). The process of Wayfinding has 4 stages:

  1. Orientation – which is used to help someone understand where they are in relation to objects around them
  2. Route to Take – aiding in choosing the best path to take to the destination
  3. Route Monitoring – the periodic checking to make sure one is still on the correct path
  4. Destination – recognition that the person has reached the intended destination.

Common Wayfinding Signage Considerations and Concerns

One item that needs to be accounted for is that your Wayfinding Signs needs to reach as many people as possible. This includes those with disabilities. So we will take into account things like readability, size, lighting and options like Braile. The use of colors and lighting can affect the impact of the signs.

Language Considerations

While English is the predominant language here, Spanish is also becoming more common place. We will need to determine if multiple languages are needed and if so how to best integrate that into your signage.
